NLG Apps optimizations

We've made several enhancements to the Describe a Bar Chart, Time-Based Variance, Target-Based Variance, and Trend Analysis apps.

You now have more control over narrative length, content, and formatting, resulting in narratives that are optimized for your specific reporting requirements and for improved readability.

Greater control of narrative content
  • At each level of drilldown, control the number of insights described in the narrative by number, threshold percentage, or statistical significance.

  • At each level of drilldown, control the order in which your insights are sorted (descending or ascending).

  • In the Time-Based Variance app, compare periods of comparable length using the Period to date option.

Enhanced readability
  • Narratives contain fewer and more concise headers.

  • Multiple insights are presented in bulleted lists.

  • Highlight positive and negative variance values with color markup.

  • Indent narratives at each level of drilldown.

Tip

Existing Describe a Bar Chart, Time-Based Variance, Target-Based Variance, and Trend Analysis narratives, configured using previous versions of Arria for Power BI, cannot be reconfigured using version 3.4.0.0.

Choose to keep your existing narratives or create new narratives using the redesigned apps. To learn more about your options, see Updating to version 3.4.0.0.

Updating to version 3.4.0.0

In published reports, updating to Arria for Power BI 3.4.0.0 does not affect the behavior of narratives and Arria Answers conversations that were configured using earlier versions of the visual.

If you attempt to reconfigure an existing narrative or Arria Answers conversation after updating, the visual displays a pop-up message giving you two choices:

  1. Click Cancel to keep the existing configuration.

  2. Click Continue to migrate your configuration settings to the redesigned user interface.

Important

Occasionally, some settings are lost during migration, so it's a good idea to make a backup of your report before you click Continue.

Changes to the configuration options for the Describe a Bar Chart, Time-Based Variance, Target-Based Variance, and Trend Analysis apps mean that their settings cannot automatically migrate to the redesigned user interface. When you click Continue, your existing configuration settings are overwritten and you must reconfigure the narrative using the updated version of the app.

Before choosing whether to replace your existing Describe a Bar Chart, Time-Based Variance, Target-Based Variance, and Trend Analysis narratives you may wish to compare them with the narratives generated using the updated apps. You can do this using the following procedure:

  1. Add a new instance of Arria for Power BI 3.4.0.0 to your report and place it next to your existing narrative (in this example, a Describe a Bar Chart narrative).

  2. Configure and generate a new narrative using the redesigned app and compare it with your existing Describe a Bar Chart narrative.

  3. Remove either the original narrative or the updated narrative from your report.

Note

For guidance on configuring the redesigned apps, see the NLG Apps tutorial, as well as the documentation for the Describe a Bar Chart, Time-Based Variance, Target-Based Variance, and Trend Analysis apps.
