Descriptive Statistics

Details covered in the analysis

The length of the narrative and the level of detail the narrative contains depend on which Narrative length option is selected.

The narrative includes some or all of the following:

• a section for each measure (e.g. Sales), drilling down by up to three dimensions (e.g. Product, Country, and Segment), which includes:

• an analysis of different combinations of dimensions, highlighting the most significant insights (such as minimums, maximums, totals, and outliers) for each combination. For example:

• when the Include distribution analysis option is selected, any skew in the data towards a particular instance of a dimension. For example, the first section of the narrative includes sections like those shown here in yellow:

Note

The order of drilldown is determined by the order of dimensions set in Step 2 of the NLG Apps wizard: Data configuration.

Data requirements

All NLG apps have the same data requirements for field names and formats. See Data requirements for details.

In addition, each app has specific data requirements:

If your data selection and configuration do not meet the requirements, the wizard disables the app and displays a warning:

Dimensions and measures

The requirements for dimensions and measures are:

Minimum

Maximum

One measure and one non-time dimension.

Unlimited measures and three non-time dimensions.

Aggregation and entity types

Not all combinations of aggregation and entity types are supported for measures. The Descriptive Statistics app can analyze the following combinations:

Note

Entity types and other data attributes are set in Step 2 of the wizard.

Narrative options

You can configure these narrative options in Step 3 of the NLG apps wizard:

OPTION

DESCRIPTION

LOCATION

Priority

Control the order into which dimensions are drilled down using this option.

Select Use selected dimension order to set priority according to how you order your fields on the attributes page.

Select Let us decide to let Arria's algorithms decide priority.

Default: Let us decide

Include distribution analysis

Distribution analysis describes how the data is distributed through a range of dimensions.

Select this option to gain insight into the skew of the data, if one exists.

Default: unchecked

Narrative length

Summary: produces a narrative of filtered facts in a more concise way than the Important things option.

Important things: produces a narrative of filtered facts based on Arria's ranking algorithm.

Tell me everything: produces a narrative that includes every fact extracted from your data by Arria's algorithms.

Default: Important things
